Hello, I’m Daniel.

My name is Michal and I have been involved in ICOS since August 2009. I directly manage several projects, including Back in Control and Wise Steps, as well as lead on funding and partnership development, ensuring that ICOS can continue to support our clients and grow. I speak Slovak and can get by in Czech, so I often support those clients who speak Slovak or Czech but speak little English. I also represent ICOS on the board of trustees of the Sunderland Black and Minority Ethnic Network (I am currently a secretary) and I am a Local Action Group member of the Sunderland Community Led Local Development (CLLD), which distributes EU funding to local groups in Sunderland.  I am passionate about making a long-lasting positive impact on the lives of minority ethnic people in Sunderland and the North East. I was born in Poland and have lived in the North East of England since moving to the UK in 2006.

Hello, I’m Julia and I came from Poland to live in the UK in 2006 when I was only 9 years old. After graduating from Durham University in 2017, I started working for ICOS as an Outreach worker for the Healthy Steps Project and I became very passionate about supporting the BME community in Sunderland.
Since 2017, I was involved in many different projects at ICOS, my position is now of a Senior Project Worker and I am also a coach on the Wise Steps Programme.  My work mostly involves working with clients on one-to-one basis and supporting them with various problems and difficulties from employability, education, housing, welfare, health and wellbeing support to issues with domestic abuse, hate crime and discrimination.
I am very passionate about supporting and working with women, I currently run two women’s only projects at ICOS: Women’s Support Project and Positive Connections, we have women’s meetings on a regular basis and we engage in various fun and creative wellbeing activities.
I’m from Poland. I’ve been working for ICOS since May 2020. I’m responsible for maintaining records for all transactions, updating financial spreadsheets and reconciling bank statements. I also fill an administrator role for the Wise Steps Programme.

Since arriving in the UK, I have been working as a full-time community interpreter, translator and an ESOL tutor aiding and supporting migrants and people with multiple language and social barriers. I interpreted for a programme featured on the BBC One Show which was aimed at migrants trying to find work and settle down in the UK.  As a project worker I manage the day-to-day activities of Back in Control Project, which seeks to empower former victims of modern slavery to regain control over their lives. I work with individuals, families and whole communities helping them to identify their needs, plan what they want to achieve and develop activities to boost their confidence.

I`m of Portuguese nationality and I work for ICOS under a project called Back in Control, my role is to help people who are currently experiencing any form of modern-day slavery.  In my role I aim to help individuals by serving as an advocate supporting the victim making the rights steps into a slavery-free lifestyle and also finding a new job or applying for benefits.
I’m very passionate and eager to help anyone and everyone that find themselves being a victim of modern slavery, me and the rest of ICOS team
The rest of the ICOS Team, including myself are constantly working towards an equal and diverse world, therefore we would be delighted to work with everyone regardless of their race or ethnicity group and level of English.

Hi, my name is Alessia, I have been employed as a Learning and Sharing Officer for ICOS for over a year. I am part of the Back in Control, three-year Project funded by the Lottery Fund which involves helping individuals who are treated like slaves, get back in control of their lives.
My role involves training organisations for example:
Educating communities and individuals on how to be vigilant and recognise signs of modern slavery, workplace exploitation and discrimination.
I have attended community events to publicise the work of ICOS. Improved community awareness, regarding modern slavery, workplace exploitation and discrimination.
Influencing and raising awareness of an individual’s vulnerability and letting communities know there are simple actions they can take to reduce a vulnerable person from being a modern slave and regaining control of their lives.
I chose to work for ICOS because I want members of our community to know there is always someone out there to assist them and being a Learning and Sharing Officer, enables me to help ICOS reach even more people.

I came from Taiwan to live in the UK in 2016. I speak Mandarin and  Taiwanese. I mainly support the financial and administrative functions of the ‘Back in Control Project’ enabling other staff to undertake their duties. I also maintain ICOS IT, the website and other social media.
